Curator notes: made by slaves on the Lee Plantation in Johnston County, North Carolina for James Madison Lee, born in 1862 and died in 1866. Lee was buried in Raleigh at Oakwood Cemetery. His mother was a member of a prominent Raleigh family and although the Lee family owned a plantation in nearby Johnston County, all of the family is buried together at Oakwood Cemetery.
